English Club

A former English Club member visited us today along with another Hokuetsu and Tokushin Course graduate. They kindly prepared a Powerpoint presentation to share with the club, showing pictures of their university life. They told us that they are continuing their English studies and often interact with foreign exchange students. We were surprised to hear that Mr. Toda, who used to be president of English Club, is acting as president for an English Club at his university now, too.

本日はイングリッシュ・クラブのOBが来てくれました。同じ大学に通う特進コースの卒業生も一緒でした。二人は親切にも事前にパワーポイントを用意し、写真を見せながら大学生活について紹介してくれました。大学でも英語の勉強を続け、積極的に海外からの留学生などとの交流に参加しているそうです。さらに、元部長である戸田さんは大学の方でもイングリッシュ・クラブの部長を務めているとのことで、一同、びっくりしました！

The club members asked questions about university life, the sempai members' memories of Hokuetsu and sought guidance for making a decision about which universities to apply to.

メンバーからは大学生活や、先輩方の北越での思い出、進路の決め方などについての質問が出ました。久しぶりに先輩に会う人も、初対面の人も、積極的に手を挙げていました。

Today in English Club, members tried the "Marshmallow Challenge". The Marshmallow Challenge is a team-building activity in which the goal is to construct the tallest free-standing tower using only the given materials. There is a time limit of 18 minutes and the marshmallow must be placed on top at the end for the tower to be complete.

The ｍaterials provided are: 1 marshmallow, 20 pieces of spaghetti, some string and some tape.

本日、イングリッシュ・クラブでは「マシュマロ・チャレンジ」に挑戦しました。これはチームワークを育むための活動で、目的は与えられた材料だけで時間内に最も高いタワーを作ること！制限時間は１８分です。タワーのてっぺんにマシュマロを置いて完成とします。

与えられる材料はマシュマロ１個、スパゲッテイー２０本、糸とセロハンテープです。

 
We split into 5 teams of 3 people each. Everyone worked very hard, excitedly trying out different methods. At English Club, we recentely introduced a new policy of "English first, then Japanese" or "EFTJ". So, members had to try to work together without speaking Japanese. Many members communicated using gestures and drawings, and of course, some English :)

３人ずつ、５つのチームに分かれて挑戦しました。失敗しながらも、メンバーは様々な方法を試して熱心に取り組んでいました。最近、ECでは新しく「まずは英語！それから日本語」という活動目標を立てたので、今回の活動は極力日本語を使わずにチャレンジ。ジェスチャーや絵、そしてもちろん、英語で何とかチームとコミュニケーションを取りました :)

In the end, 3 out of 5 teams managed to successfully construct a tower that could support the weight of the marshmallow on top. The winning team's tower was 60 cm tall! Great job, everyone!!

最終的な結果は５チーム中３チームが無事にマシュマロの重さに耐えられるタワーを完成させ、優勝チームは堂々の「６０ｃｍ」！皆さん、おつかれさまでした！！

Today, English Club members participated in a special workshop prepared by the teachers. They learned some useful facilitation skills while discussing the future of the club.

本日、ECのメンバーはECの先生たちが用意した特別なワークショップに参加しました。その名も「スキル・アップ・ミーティング」！

その目的は、

1. ミーティングの進行方法について学び、今後の運営や学校生活に生かせるスキルを得る、そして

2. 今後のECの在り方について議論し、今後の方向性を決める、

というものでした。

The workshop had three main parts. I’ll introduce them below.

内容について簡単に紹介します。大きく分けて、３つのパートがありました。

Part 1. Human Chain (a.k.a. Human Knot)

In this activity, all members close their eyes and reach out their hands to hold hands with each other, making a large human “knot”. Once everyone is linked, they must open their eyes and work together to untangle the “chain”.

「人間知恵の輪」というこの活動では、まず、全員が目をつぶって両手を前に差し出し、互いに手を繋ぎ合います。全員が繋がったら、目を開けて、協力しながら「鎖」をほどいていきます。

Part 2. Lecture by Mr. Seki

The members listened to a short lecture by Mr. Seki, our head teacher, on key terms and concepts for meeting facilitation. They learned about three meeting roles — facilitator, time keeper and writer — and how every person may participate actively in discussions, acting as “mini-facilitators”.

EC顧問の関先生によるレクチャーでは、ミーティングの進行に関わる役割などについて、基礎的な用語を学びました。ファシリテーター、タイムキーパー、記録者の３つの役割がありますが、実際はミーティングに参加している全ての人が会の進行に積極的に関わる「プチ・ファシリテーター」としての働きが求められます。

Part 3. Small Group and Whole Group Meeting

Finally, the members used the concepts they learned to actually hold a meeting discussing the future of the club. First, they worked in small groups. Then, we ended the session with a “whole group meeting” in which 6 representatives from each of the small groups held a meeting in the center of the room, as all of the other members observed from the outside in a circle.

最後に、学んだことを踏まえて実際に役割分担ををしてミーティングをしてみました。まずはいくつかの小グループで話し合いをし、最終的には全体でミーティングしました。各小グループから選出された６名の代表者が中央でミーティングをし、それを他のメンバーが円を作って周りから観察します。この時の議題は「ECはメンバーが成長できる場であるべきです。今のECに不足しているものを補い、もっと成長できる部活になるためにはどうしたらよいか、具体的な案を考えて下さい」でした。

The students all had a sparkle in their eyes as they earnestly discussed what was still lacking in the club, and how they wanted to change it for the better. I can’t wait to see how the members make this club their own over the next year!

真剣な眼差しで、この部活にまだ足りないものと、いかにしてより良くしていきたいかを語り合う姿が印象的でした。この一年でメンバーがどのような部活をつくりあげるか、楽しみです！
